Staring into the abyss – who snaps first?

Posted by Possum Comitatus on November 23, 2007

The last day of the campaign, the last chance for politicians to lose it.

The consistent polling for nine months seems to have created an air of inevitable defeat among Coalition troops. There’s been no tantrums, and no brainsnaps of the type that one usually get’s glimpes of when sitting members realise that their time is up.

The closest so far was Alexander Downer on Sky this morning, but he’s always got that temperamental nature about him.

So if you spot a good political brainsnap today – be sure to let us know.

not a pollie, but certainly the worst (albeit hastily retracted)commentary gaffe today has so far come from Gerard Henderson on AM – who declared the Coalition could win with 45% TPP!!

My prediction, based solely on form, is that Tony Abbott will crack first.

  3. Clarke & Dawe http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/ did a great Howard brain snap last night – file under ‘one of their funniest’. It’s been great seeing long-term media and commentators realize that this week is probably their last chance to kick Howard in the ghoulies. My money would be on Tony Abbott for the first big spazz of the day. . . but only because I’m guessing Andrew Robb has been muzzled, Brendan Nelson’s been hidden in drawer, and Costello’s taken his medication. Hmmm – Mark Vaile for the wild card.

Dolly Downer should have stayed in Singapore and enjoyed his holiday, we don’t want him back in Mayo!

I dont think were going to see a snap from John.I think this exchange on AM was interesting. Chris didnt just give him dixers.

CHRIS UHLMANN: It’s no good having a beautiful set of numbers and a nice unemployment rate Prime Minister, if you fear that you might lose your job tomorrow. It doesn’t matter what the national economy looks like.

JOHN HOWARD: Forget about my job.

There was abiguity in the question, Chris was asking about the economy and a normal worker losing their job. John didnt say something like “I dont fear i’ll lose my job” which i think he would have said if he believed it.

That was classic. Howard has his head so far up his arse that he didn’t even realise that Uhlmann wasn’t talking about him.

I was told about the program and read the transcript, and i made the same mistake myself.

I think John makes the mistake of looking at the big picture, and only the big picture. Its a bit like putting your feet in the oven and head in the freezer but saying everything is ok because the average body temperature is 37degrees.

And part of me cant rule out that he really thinks he’s doing the best he can and is doing a good job which is why i dont have a baseball bat, just a sharp voting pencil and a beer to drink immediately after i do my part.

How about who’s going to throw the biggest tantie tomorrow night?

My bet is on Turnbull if he loses Wentworth doing a Kernot and dishing the dirt on Howard over Kyoto, the Pulp Mill and anything else he’s feeling grumpy about.

Just because you hate Downer doesn’t mean you can remove his human status.

Sorry Howard, honest mistake – the sentence was a rewrite and I hadnt cleaned it up before posting.

    All fixed.

It’s hard to tell with Lexie Downer. He always seems to be on the verge of self-pitying hysteria at the best of times

For a seasoned campaigher like John Howard, that must come close.

I want to see Hyacinth lose it. Abbot obviously was locked in his box.
