Heads up to all – What The People Want

Posted by Possum Comitatus on May 21, 2008

Just a quick heads up to readers, Graham Young of Online Opinion fame (among many other things), also runs qualitative polling research and is releasing some of the results from his latest round of polling on the budget

It’s worth a squiz.

Poss- I found it interesting that Graham’s polling found that the alcopops issue has no cut-through whatsoever – the Libs appear to be barking up the wrong tree there (but they are spending a lot of time barking at one another).

You haven’t talked a lot about qualitative polling in the past – be curious to know what you make of lexical analysis and such for digging out the voters thoughts?

Qualitative polling works on a completely different set of rules, and is only as good as the underlying methodology or the interviewer. You can pick a dodgy quantitative poll from a hundred yards, but qual polls are harder to rate.

Leximancer and whatnot seem to produce the focus group equivalent of a response tag cloud, just more sophisticated – useful in and of itself for plenty of things, but still limited. One of the big problems with focus group research is that people often dont feel comfortable telling you the truth, or at least the whole truth. I suppose each piece of qual polling has to be judged on it’s own merits in that regard.

But what Graham is doing seems to be a good use for lexical analysis. He seems to have been careful to use it within its limits, which is always a good thing!
